Common Interview Questions: How To Answer Them

Preparing for an interview can seem daunting at times.

Tell me about yourself

This is undeniably the most common introductory question in the history of interviews. The interviewer aims to better understand your qualifications, what led you to the job and generally why you think you’d be the best fit for it. This is how you should structure your answer:

  1. Begin by briefly describing your background with a summary of your most notable responsibilities
  2. Next, briefly give a recap of your previous experience with key achievements
  3. Lastly, express how you discovered this opportunity and why you fit the bill

 

Why do you want to work with us?

Interviewers frequently pose this question to determine whether or not you researched on the company and critically thought about whether you’re a good fit.  The best way to adequately prepare for this question is to ensure you have studied the products, services, mission, history and culture of this workplace. In your answer, it is worth mentioning career goals and values that are aligned to the company’s mission, vision and/or values.

 

Why are you leaving your current job?

This is where you take what we call a pregnant pause. Give yourself enough time to reflect on your answer because this will give the interviewer the assurance that you’re being deliberate about this job change. Consider the following when constructing a response:

  1. Focus on your skills
  2. Keep it positive
  3. Relate it back to the job
  4. Provide a recap

 

What are your greatest strengths?

To answer this question, follow the tips below:

  1. Share 2-3 positive qualities and personal attributes
  2. Back them up with examples
  3. Relate them back to the role for which you’re interviewing

 

What are your greatest weaknesses?

To answer this question, follow the tips below:

  1. Select a weakness that is honest but professionally relevant
  2. Add context
  3. Provide a specific example
  4. Explain how you overcame or are working to overcome it

 

Where do you see yourself in the next five to ten years?

Understanding how you see your life going in the future helps organisations understand whether the direction of the role and company fits with your personal development goals. Therefore, the best way to answer this question is to either,

  1. Give a brief description of skills you want to grow and accomplishments you’d like to attain especially if it would benefit the company OR
  2. Provide precise career goals including any dream roles or projects

Can you tell us about a difficult work situation and how you overcame it?

This interviewer wants to know how you handle pressure especially when it becomes intense and deadlines are looming.  Share an instance where you remained calm despite the chaos by following the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, and Result or Learning.

 

Do you have any questions?

This is an opportunity for you to ask 2-3 lingering questions you have. It is crucial because it shows the interviewer, you’re serious about the role.

Some questions may vary from company to company. The more you prepare, the more likely you will leave a lasting first impression and overshadow fellow candidates.
